OSSIEC Conducts Refresher Course for Members Ahead of Osun LG Election
In preparation for the upcoming Local Government election in Osun State, the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission (OSSIEC) has organized a refresher course for its members.
The training, facilitated by the Justice, Development, and Peace Makers' Centre (JDPMC) and funded by the European Union, took place at the Reginal Suite in Osogbo on Thursday.
During the event, Barrister Hashim Abioye, Chairman of OSSIEC, reassured the people of Osun State of the commission's commitment to conducting a free and fair election.
He emphasized that under his leadership, OSSIEC would uphold all regulations and would not compromise the integrity of the election to favor any political party ahead of the vote on February 22, 2025.
It was noted that 19 candidates from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and other political parties were disqualified from participating in the election.
When questioned about the ongoing participation of registered political parties, Abioye clarified that although some parties are challenging the disqualification of their candidates in court, the majority of parties remain committed to the election process.
Abioye explained, "We acted based on the verification committee’s report, and we cannot alter the rules for any party. If parties fail to comply with the regulations, we cannot assist them, and that is the challenge some parties are facing."
